What is this
Curriculum?
This online curriculum and
resource provided by Custom Typing (www.customtyping.com)
is one which has been developed over years of
hands-on work with students in schools.
This is a
detailed curriculum as well as resource guide which
can be used as a guide and assessment tool during
the process of training. Teachers and trainers can
use the stages of training
Curriculum Forms and
Checklist pages as a means to
record a student's progress. In addition, extensive
resources, links and information is provided to
assist both the trainer and the student in gaining a
better understanding of how to more effectively and
accurately use speech recognition.
This Web-based resource and training curriculum is
developed specifically based on the Dragon
NaturallySpeaking program. Over 10 years of work in
the field of speech recognition, NaturallySpeaking
has been the program most effectively used by
students in schools. Also, computer industry reviews
and information indicate clearly that Dragon
NaturallySpeaking has consistently outperformed
other speech recognition programs. In addition it is
the oldest and most well-known speech-recognition
program available.
Forms
and Checklists:
This speech recognition curriculum presents 5 stages
of training. Go to
Stages of Training
and Forms
Each stage has a one-page checklist
form which consists of items for training, as well
as sub-skills which can be evaluated and recorded as
students master the skills. These checklists are an
hierarchical approach to training the skills needed
for using the Dragon Naturally speaking speech
recognition program. Space is provided to
check off each sub-skill as it is presented and to
record the date on which the student completed or
mastered each specific skill.
The live, online speech
recognition forms are part of our
Custom Typing Training
web site. They require an account so that
information on the forms can be stored for each user.
Linked resources:
Some items or sub skills are linked to resources
such as cheat sheets, instruction forms, and
additional information. Some documents are in PDF
format. In order to view these you will need to
download the free PDF viewer here. Note that in the checklist
curriculum, links are provided to the online Dragon Naturally
speaking manual, indicated by a
. Clicking on the arrow will take you to the
manual. You will need to navigate to the page shown next to
the link (it is not possible to link to specific page numbers
in the manual).
Printed
reference sheets /
binder:
It is recommended that the stages of training
checklists as well as linked documents are printed
out and placed in a binder to serve as a resource
document for each student. Some students need extra
assistance such as reminders regarding commands or
dictation strategies. In this case some of the
visual reference sheets can be useful if they are
printed and posted close to the computer monitor as
the student is working.
Video
Clip tutorials and examples
Video clips and case studies are provided
specifically for the purposes of demonstrating just
how powerful and beneficial speech recognition can
be. Also, real-life training sessions are shown in
video clips, which gives a factual and authentic
glimpse into the real-life problems and difficulties
you will encounter while training and learning how
to use speech recognition.
